2006 Season - Week 17
New Champs and Chumps
A huge congratulations to the Weymouth Bay Bargaineers and their owner John who becomes the 10th different owner to win in the 12 year history of the Papas Fritas Trophy. John led from week 5 and his winning total of 535 ties Mark for the 7th highest score all-time. However the special thing about these winners is that they cost just $4million to put together. To emphasise what an amazing feat that is, if John can get 535 points from $4m if he spent $10m theoretically he would be on course for 1,337 points! Runner-Up Johnny tried to close the gap in weeks 15 & 16 and had John looking over his shoulder going into the last week but he couldn’t get closer than 15 points as John out-scored him by 1 this week. Johnny’s total of 519 did tie David S for 10th highest all-time. H picks up the bronze medal after his “Greybeards” finished 3rd. However a word of warning for John, last year Daz won it all as he out-pointed AP by 1, but both will be playing in the Conference next year along with David S whose 280 points tied Dave G for the 3rd lowest score ever. They will be replaced by Ron, Wayne and Dave G. The Gang Green led the Conference from week 6 as Ron rode LaDainian Tomlinson to victory and the 4th highest score of all-time (548 points) behind Johnny & Wayne 574 points each and Chief 557 points. Wayne moved from 4th after week 15 to 2nd after back-to-back 50 point weeks. Last week I said Wayne had joined Mark for most visits to the Hall of Fame with 7. That was incorrect but I can confirm he has now tied Mark as they both have 8 visits to the Marble Halls. Dave G had back-to-back visits in weeks 13 & 14 as he to moved past Rookie George who had been in the promotion zone all season only to drop out in the last fortnight.
